UHWoW ‘Restorative Justice Special’ positions released!!!

Dear Warriors,

Restorative Justice  brings those harmed by crime, and those responsible for the harm, into communication – hopefully enabling everyone affected to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward.

16 – 23 November 2014 is International Restorative Justice Week. Across the world, people will be highlighting the impact of restorative justice.

Ministry of Justice research shows that restorative justice reduces reoffending by 14%, and delivers 85% victim satisfaction. Department for Education research showed that teachers say restorative justice is the most effective approach to dealing with bullying in schools.

So we are marking restorative justice week by doing a Restorative Justice-themed WoW on Thursday, 20^th November at 6pm in the Courtroom, DeHavilland campus. There will be prizes and certificates for the winner and runner-up this week!

If you would like to defend any of the following positions, please volunteer, using the ‘comments’ box below, and I will assign you a position at random (subject to availability):

1. That restorative justice allows criminals off the hook

2. That ‘an eye for an eye’ is the only true restorative justice

3. That calling me a ‘victim’  is actually an insult

4. Restorative justice? Isn’t the UK criminal justice system soft enough already?

5. That the only true remorse a criminal ever feels is that of being caught

6. That without restorative justice, offenders will never actually understand the impact of their actions

You will need to consider the position, research it carefully and then defend it for one minute – then be subjected to questions from the audience. You will be marked on three criteria; (i) content – what you say initially and in response to questions; (b) presentation – how you say it; (c) popularity – the public vote. The judge’s decision is final – and I will be your judge!

Afterwards, there will be a drinks reception in the Courtroom building, and the weekly law social, thereafter, at Club DeHavilland, as usual.
